Madklubben gathers more than 40 restaurants in one app

The daily message to the team, weekly NPS updates, staff meetings, events and HR forms all run through Madklubben's own app. Restaurants that used to run on their own became one community.

About Madklubben

Madklubben is a Danish restaurant group founded in 2007 by Anders Aagaard, who wanted to create a culture of eating out, also on a grey Tuesday in October. One restaurant has become more than 40, among them Frankies, Hanzō, Bazaar, Food Club and Madklubben itself, in Copenhagen, Lyngby, Aarhus, Odense and Esbjerg.

More than 40 nationalities work in the restaurants, many of them young people in an early job. Everyone is asked how they are doing twice a year, and the staff handbook and the whistleblower scheme are in the app rather than in a folder in the office.

In short

  • Restaurant managers write the daily message to their team in the app, and management posts news there.

  • Much of the HR work runs through forms, a feature Madklubben developed together with Monotree: employees reach HQ, anonymously if they want, a work injury is reported the same way, and no papers go back and forth.

  • The app is the gathering place for staff events like the yearly Masterchef and football tournament.

Everything, and everyone, in the same app

Madklubben wanted its material and its employees in the same app. Many of the staff are young, and the app looks like the social media they are on every day.

What changed most was where the talking happens. It used to stay inside each restaurant; now it runs between all of them.

Monotree helped create a community across our restaurants. It's great to collaborate with Monotree; it's dynamic, and we brainstorm about features, possibilities, and the industry as a whole. I really like the mix of operational features with communication - that it becomes a social network.

The working day runs through the app

The restaurants use the app every day to send the daily message to the team. Once a week they write about how the restaurant is doing on its NPS score. Management posts news, and the social wall is used to call staff meetings and set up other events.

In HR, forms do much of the work. Madklubben and Monotree developed them together because the need was there. Employees can contact HR through a form, anonymously if they prefer, and work injuries are handled the same way. The flow is automated, so papers and templates no longer go back and forth.

For a restaurant manager there is a private benefit as well. With all work communication in one app, she can ask people to write to her there, and she is no longer contacted on every other platform in her spare time.

We chose Monotree because it can gather all our material and employees in one place. We have a lot of young employees, and it's great that the look reflects what they also see on social media every day.

Serious about work, social at the same time

Madklubben runs a Masterchef competition and a football tournament every year, and the app has become the gathering place for both. That mix is what they value: the app has room for the serious side of restaurant work and for the social side.

The two companies keep swapping ideas about what the app should do next, which is how the HR forms came about in the first place.
