About La Cachapera

La Cachapera is a Venezuelan restaurant brand in Spain, built around the cachapa, a sweet-corn pancake. It started in 2015 as a food truck in Barcelona, which Foodtruckya named the best food truck in Spain in 2016, and opened its first restaurant in the heart of Barcelona in 2018.

There are six restaurants now: Sagrada Familia, Poble Nou and L'Esquerra de l'Eixample in Barcelona, Chueca and Cuzco in Madrid, and Ruzafa in Valencia. Next to the restaurants it offers delivery, and catering and the food truck for private and corporate events and celebrations. The interviews were filmed at Poble Nou in Barcelona, where the team takes pride in the service and the food, and there is always a piece of Venezuela on the plate.

The line under the name is "Sabor latino, espíritu mediterráneo", Latin flavour with a Mediterranean spirit, and that is what the restaurants are after: Venezuelan tradition, real flavour and service worth coming back for. In 2022 it received the Premio Makro at Palo Market Fest and a recognition for Venezuelan entrepreneurship from HIP.

In short

  • La Cachapera's own app is its intranet, its internal communication channel and its training tool for standardising how the restaurants operate.

  • The app replaced a growing number of WhatsApp groups that left staff feeling they never got away from work.

  • Monotree is integrated with Skello, the group's rota system, so the two are not set up separately.

Too many WhatsApp groups

Before Monotree, La Cachapera ran its internal communication through WhatsApp, and the number of groups kept growing. It was cumbersome, and the team disliked it, because work never seemed to stop.

What the group went looking for was three things: an intranet, a channel for internal communication, and training, so that every restaurant works and talks the same way. Those are the three things it now uses Monotree for.

Honestly, life before Monotree was pretty cumbersome, because we kept getting more and more WhatsApp groups. Our team was quite unhappy, because it felt like there was never any switching off from work. Yes, having La Cachapera's own app completely changes the employee experience. It brings the team together much more and creates a culture.

Rotas in Skello, connected to Monotree

Rotas are planned in Skello, a workforce management system. Eric Ojeda, production director, coordinates and controls production across the group, and he uses Skello to plan the restaurants' daily shifts, holidays and overtime.

Skello is connected to Monotree, so the two do not have to be set up separately. That is what La Cachapera values: less to configure and fewer systems to keep track of.

An app with La Cachapera's name on it

Having an app with La Cachapera on the front of it changed how the job feels. The team is closer for it, and a culture has grown around it.

The interface is easy and intuitive, which matters in a group that takes this seriously: Lucas Romero is its director of systems, it tries new tools early, and in 2023 it was named Digital Restaurant of the Year.
